Power Requirements & Dedicated Circuits

Storage In Motion recommends to our clients that they have a power outlet available within 50′ of where the refrigeration unit will be parked. A 50′ 10 gauge heavy duty power cable is furnished with the rental unit. The electrical specification for the outlet is 110 volts 20 amp dedicated circuit.

Dedicated circuits are circuits that are set aside for a specific purpose, which is, to work with a single appliance only. Dedicated circuits will have their own circuit breaker in your electrical box and no other device or appliance will be plugged in. This will ensure that these appliances will be able to draw the current they need without overloading your system, blowing a fuse or tripping an electric circuit.

Dedicated circuits are not only recommended, they are required by the National Electric Code for major appliances. If you notice that certain appliances in your home are constantly tripping an electrical circuit, it may be a good indication that the appliance requires a dedicated circuit. Examples include those that are immobile or with motors. There are also certain appliances that legally require a dedicated circuit. These include:

  • Electric ranges
  • Wall ovens
  • Refrigerators
  • Microwaves
  • Freezers
  • Dishwashers
  • Garbage Disposals
  • Washers
  • Dryers
  • Heating and air conditioning units
  • Furnaces
  • Water heaters

A dedicated circuit is important in ensuring that your refrigeration unit is running safely. Operating a refrigeration unit on a circuit that is not dedicated runs the risk of drawing more current than the circuit can handle when anything else is plugged into the same circuit. This can result in tripping breakers, blowing fuses and the overheating of wire insulation which can lead to electrical fires.
